Laurent Clerc’s life began December 26, 1785 in La Balme-les-Grottes, Isere, in France, and was born to atypical bourgeois household. This was like a socialite middle class standing. When he was a year old, his parents were busy blowing him off doing whatever busy socialite parents do, and as kids will, he managed to fall from his chair onto the hearth. This is by a fireplace and kind of terrible parenting, and he acquired permanent scar on the right side of his face below his ear. From this point on, his parents noticed he was deaf and had no sense of smell, but Laurent swears up and down he was always like this. The scar he got from this incident was the basis for his name sign.
As Clerc grew older, he took the sage advice that a wise woman once said, and I quote: “I don’t need you and your brand new Benz…or your bougie friends.” and he left his parents and went to the Paris school for the deaf, was taught by Abbe Sicard, and eventually became a teacher there.
